Suspicious object

If you have found an object of unknown origin and suspect that it may be a bomb or another dangerous device:

  1. As far as possible, secure the area at risk using elementary safety precautions, without endangering yourself or others.
  2. Do not touch the suspicious object.
  3. Immediately inform the building security service, the building manager (porter) or the head of the organisational unit about the situation, and wait for their instructions (e.g. to call the emergency services or evacuate the building).
  4. Wait in a safe place until the emergency services arrive and, if an evacuation is announced, follow the instructions of the services and follow the rules described on the Evacuation page.
  5. Before leaving the building, check your work area and its immediate surroundings to locate objects of unknown origin (pass the information on to the services).

How to recognise a suspicious package? Caution should be exercised when dealing with any parcel that, for example:

  • does not include the sender’s name or address;
  • comes from a sender or a place from which you would not expect any parcel addressed directly to a member of the university authorities;
  • has non-standard dimensions or weight (e.g. weight that is disproportionate to the size), and you do not expect such a parcel, e.g. as per the order placed;
  • contains visible or palpable wires or cables etc.;
  • includes an incorrect (e.g. misspelt) name or position/function of the recipient;
  • does not include the recipient's name, only his or her position (e.g. Rector) and the note ‘personal delivery’;
  • the postmark does not match the sender's address/return address.

If a parcel seems suspicious to you, do not open, touch or handle it:

  1. Immediately inform the building security service, the building manager (porter) or the head of the organisational unit about the situation, and wait for their instructions (e.g. to call the emergency services or evacuate the building).
  2. Turn off the ventilation/air conditioning, and close the windows.
  3. Leave the room and lock it to prevent entry by outsiders.
  4. Avoid touching your face and wash your hands thoroughly.
  5. Alert all people in the immediate vicinity.
  6. Write a list of people who may have been in the vicinity at the time of receiving the parcel and make the list available to the emergency services.
  7. If an evacuation is announced, follow the instructions of the emergency services and the rules described on the Evacuation page.

If you have opened a parcel whose contents seem suspicious:

  1. Turn off the ventilation/air conditioning, and close the windows.
  2. Do not disturb the contents of the parcel: do not spill, handle, touch or smell it or cause air movement in the room.
  3. If possible and this will not expose others to the contents of the parcel, place it in a thick plastic bag and seal it tightly; then place the sealed bag in a second bag, which should also be sealed.
  4. Leave the room and lock it to prevent entry by outsiders;
  5. Immediately inform the building security service, the building manager (porter) or the head of the organisational unit about the situation, and wait for their instructions (e.g. to call the emergency services or evacuate the building).
  6. Avoid touching your face and wash your hands thoroughly.
  7. If possible, take off your clothes, place them in a plastic bag or resealable container, take a shower, wash your entire body thoroughly, and hand your clothes to the emergency services when they arrive.
  8. Write a list of people who may have been in the vicinity at the time of opening the parcel and make the list available to the emergency services.
  9. If an evacuation is announced, follow the instructions of the emergency services and the rules described on the Evacuation page.
