Terrorist attack

No matter where you are or what situation you are in:

If you find yourself in a situation involving a terrorist attack:

  1. Watch out! — for unusual events and behaviour:
    • inform, in a way that will not endanger your safety (e.g. by telephone), the security service, the building manager (porter) or the head of the organisational unit that such a situation has occurred.
  2. Run away! — if you hear gunshots, explosions etc.:
    • have a well-thought-out escape route,
    • leave your belongings behind (don't waste time on things that might slow down your escape),
    • help others to escape if it is possible and will not slow down your escape,
    • keep your hands visible (otherwise you may be considered an attacker by the services),
    • if possible, prevent others from entering the danger area,
    • once safe, call the 112 emergency number.
  3. Hide! — if you are unable to run away:
    • hide out of the attacker's sight,
    • close and lock the door leading to your hiding place,
    • turn off the lights,
    • mute your phone, turn off vibrations, and be very quiet,
    • if you hear gunshots, lie down on the floor away from doors and windows.
  4. Fight back! — only fight when there is no other option and your life depends on it:
    • try to overpower the attacker using the element of surprise, and cooperate with others,
    • act with as much physical aggression as possible,
    • improvise when it comes to your weapon; use whatever is close at hand,
    • be motivated and convinced in your actions — your life depends on it.

If you are taken hostage as a result of a terrorist attack:

  • remember that such a situation may last for a long time — try to develop in yourself the need to survive,
  • follow all the terrorists’ orders, obey them without discussion,
  • stay calm and natural, find a middle position between aggression and passivity/submission,
  • do not make any sudden movements or gestures drawing the kidnappers’ attention, do not ask unnecessary questions, do not look into the terrorists' eyes, sit calmly in place,
  • always ask permission if you want to stand up, open your bag, use the toilet etc.
  • hand over your personal belongings at the terrorists' request,
  • if possible, remove (throw away) all signs of your holding an important position etc.,
  • if you have to hand over your identity documents, hand over a document that does not reveal your position etc.,
  • remember the details of your kidnappers (description, clothing, physical characteristics, weapons) and surroundings,
  • remember that not all kidnappers disclose their identity at the same time (some may pretend to be hostages),
  • be patient — your main goal is to survive.

When emergency services intervene and during the evacuation:

  • stay calm,
  • if you are not sure it is the emergency services — do not open the door, the services will do it themselves if necessary,
  • if you hear gunshots, lie down on the floor away from doors and windows,
  • follow the instructions of the services, do not ask unnecessary questions,
  • do not make any sudden movements or gestures attracting attention,
  • do not hold anything in your hands, do not put them in your pockets (keep your hands visible),
  • submit to a security check,
  • if you have any relevant information, pass it on to the services.
